Fair Labor Association Joins Call to Improve Worker Safety in Bangladesh

Tuesday, November 27, 2018

The Fair Labor Association joined with six international organizations to call on the government of Bangladesh to improve and ensure worker safety in the Bangladeshi ready-made garment sector in a letter to the nation's prime minister.

The letter opens, "We, the undersigned representatives of multi-stakeholder initiatives, write with full respect and in total recognition of the important position that Bangladesh holds in the global ready-made garment sector and in acknowledgement of your Government’s steadfast leadership in the industry’s development and your country’s pride and determination to create a safe, secure and sustainable industry."

"There is still more to be done," the letter states, noting that the installation of adequate fire detection systems and structural retrofitting of factory facilities remains far below acceptable levels even in the wake of the 2013 tragedy at Rana Plaza.
