SUMMARY:From Heat to Health: Protecting the Workers Who Power the Global Economy
DESCRIPTION:Climate change is already affecting workers’ health\, particularly workers in climate-vulnerable countries and sectors exposed to extreme heat. However\, climate-health discussions often focus on health systems and communities while overlooking the workplace and the millions of workers whose livelihoods depend on climate-exposed industries. \n\n\n\nOn November 14\, join the Fair Labor Association and an expert panel of workers\, employers/brands\, governments\, health experts\, and climate actors at the 31st United Nations Climate Change Conference to examine how climate change—particularly extreme heat—is affecting the health\, safety\, livelihoods\, and productivity of workers in global supply chains.  \n\n\n\nFocusing on manufacturing and agriculture linked to garment and footwear supply chains\, speakers will connect emerging evidence on heat stress and worker health with practical solutions for employers\, brands\, policymakers\, and workers. Research and experience from Cambodia\, India\, Italy\, Türkiye and other climate-vulnerable countries will illustrate the diverse impacts of extreme heat across supply chains\, including occupational health risks\, reduced productivity\, income insecurity and the disproportionate impacts experienced by workers in vulnerable and lower-income communities. \n\n\n\nPanelists also will review the growing body of research\, tools and guidance on heat stress developed by researchers\, trade associations\, civil society and multi-stakeholder initiatives\, and consider how these resources can inform workplace adaptation\, occupational health and safety measures\, responsible purchasing practices\, worker participation\, and just-transition strategies. \n\n\n\nThe speaker line up includes Chaimae Azmi\, Manager of Research & Development at Fair Labor Association; Hulusi Ögütcüler\, Manager of Factory Assessments at Fair Labor Association; Sophia Yang\, Founder & Executive Director at Threading Change; Dr. Laurie Parsons\, Reader in Human Geography at Royal Holloway\, University of London\, Rafi Ay\, General President of Öz İplik İş; Lucy Siers\, Senior Research Scholar\, Global Labor\, Business and Human Rights at NYU Stern; Barbara Bijelic\, Head of Regulation and Standards\, Responsible Business Conduct at the OECD. \n\n\n\nThe event will be livestreamed on the COP31 Health Pavilion website.

SUMMARY:Making Stakeholder Engagement Meaningful: From lessons to impact
DESCRIPTION:Due diligence is credible when rightsholders can influence the decisions that affect them. This session looks at what that takes: the conditions needed for dialogue to be meaningful\, inclusive and durable\, and what it delivers when rightsholders have genuine influence.   \n\n\n\nJoin the Fair Labor Association\, CNV Internationaal\, the Ethical Trading Initiative\, Fairtrade International\, Meaningful Stakeholder Engagement Alliance (AIM-Progress\, amfori\, Ethical Trade Sweden\, Ethical Trading Initiative\, Food Network for Ethical Trade)\, Oxfam\, Proforest\, and the Social and Economic Council of the Netherlands to examine how stakeholder engagement supports\, and never substitutes for\, freedom of association and collective bargaining for workers; how free\, prior\, and informed consent applies for indigenous peoples; and what both mean in practice for effective HREDD.  \n\n\nRegister

SUMMARY:WEOG Regional Session: Meaningful stakeholder engagement for effective HRDD and accountability
DESCRIPTION:Join FLA\, the Working Group on Business and Human Rights and Australian Human Rights Institute UNSW\, the Danish Institute for Human Rights\, and the Geneva Center for Business and Human Rights to reflect on how programs and policies to implement the UNGPs designed with stakeholder engagement at their heart can bring about positive human rights change.  \n\n\n\nThrough case studies\, presenters will demonstrate what effective stakeholder engagement looks like in practice\, and that moving stakeholder interaction along a continuum from token consultation to meaningful engagement requires it to be early\, sustained\, collective\, inclusive\, two-way\, and linked to accountability and involve business\, government\, civil society\, and workers.  \n\n\n\nFLA Executive Vice President Richa Mittal will share the award-winning Harvesting the Future initiative in rose supply chains in Türkiye as an example of how multi-stakeholder collaboration can effectively address human and labor rights risks in agricultural supply chains.  \n\n\nRegister for the forum
