Cimatextiles Factory in Guatemala

Publication date:
Monday, February 5, 2007

On February 5, 2007, FLA released a report on a Third Party Complaint (3PC) filed by SITRACIMA and SITRACHOI, two unions representing workers at the Cimatextiles factory in Guatemala. The 3PC alleged that a female physician working at the factory's clinic was fired because she refused to follow instructions from management to deny written authorizations for workers to visit the social security institute - a requirement for workers to receive medical assistance. FLA affiliate Liz Claiborne, Inc. sourced from the factory at the time the 3PC was filed. FLA recommended that Liz Claiborne work with Cimatextiles to develop a comprehensive human resource management policy with more transparent and nondiscriminatory hiring and dismissal procedures and closed the 3PC at step 2 of the filing process.
