Gildan Activewear Dominican Republic Factory

Publication date:
Monday, January 10, 2011

On January 10, 2011, FLA issued a report on a Third Party Complaint (3PC) from the SITRAGILDAN union, affiliated with the union federation FEDOTRAZONAS, at FLA affiliated company Gildan Activewear Inc.'s Gildan Activewear Dominican Republic factory (Dortex-Gildan). The 3PC alleged a range of noncompliances with the FLA Workplace Code of Conduct at the factory, in particular with the Freedom of Association and Collective Bargaining elements. At Step 2 of the FLA 3PC procedure, Gildan elected to internally investigate the allegations raised in the complaint. Shortly after issuing the report, FLA engaged Dr. Adrián Goldin, international expert on labor law and labor relations, freedom of association and collective bargaining, and Professor of Law at the Universidad de San Andrés, Argentina, to provide independent assessment of the complaint and prepare a public report and recommendations. An update was released two months later. Dortex-Gildan management updated the document to reflect further remediation actions, and FLA released a third update in April. FLA will continue to monitor Dortex-Gildan and will publish updates as necessary.
