In August of 2014, the FLA conducted a series of assessments on a supply chain in Turkey shared by three FLA affiliates -- Nestlé, and two of its first-tier hazelnut suppliers, Balsu and Olam, which together account for 99 percent of Nestlé's hazelnut volume. A team consisting of both FLA assessors and external assessors visited a total of 70 hazelnut gardens in 2014, interviewing 437 workers about their working conditions.

As a requirement of a company's affiliation with the Fair Labor Association (FLA), the FLA annually conducts independent assessments of a sample of each affiliated company’s supply chain. For Nestlé, which joined the FLA in 2012, this means monitoring the portion of its cocoa supply chain served by the Nestlé Cocoa Plan (NCP), which represents around 20 percent of its total cocoa supply chain.

In late 2013, the Fair Labor Association conducted several Independent External Assessments of working conditions at farms involved in Nestlé’s cocoa supply chain in the Ivory Coast. In conjunction with this broader assessment, Nestlé requested a more specific assessment of women’s roles in Ivorian cocoa-producing communities.

In August 2011, the Fair Labor Association (FLA) conducted an assessment of labor and human rights conditions in Nestlé’s hazelnut supply chain in Turkey, responding to a request from Nestlé for an external investigation. Based on the results of this assessment, Nestlé developed and submitted an action plan to the FLA in February 2012.

On November 26, 2012, FLA, Nestlé and FLA’s Global Forum for Sustainable Supply Chains jointly organized a stakeholder consultation at Nestlé’s R&D Center in Yopougon, Abidjan. The consultation was an important part of the Action Plan on the Responsible Sourcing of Cocoa from Côte d’Ivoire, developed by Nestlé in response to the FLA Assessment on Nestlé’s cocoa supply chain in Côte d’Ivoire.
