Discussing the implications of the UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights for FLA

On February 19, Rachel Davis of Shift (right) made a presentation to the FLA Board of Directors and led a discussion about the implications of the UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights for the FLA. The presentation was based on a study conducted by Shift – an independent nonprofit organization chaired by Professor John Ruggie, former Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General for Business and Human Rights, who led a six-year effort to develop the UN Guiding Principles.

As an organization that continuously strives to align its work with international labor standards and to complement the efforts of other labor and human rights stakeholders, FLA requested the study by Shift following the unanimous endorsement of the Guiding Principles by the UN Human Rights Council in June 2011. In requesting the study, FLA sought to evaluate the alignment of its own program through the lens of the UN Guiding Principles and identify possible areas for improvement.

Shift’s report, authored by the organization’s President, Caroline Rees, describes many ways in which FLA’s policies, processes and practices are well aligned with the UN Guiding Principles. Shift also made a number of recommendations for possible improvement, and FLA will seek opportunities to incorporate these recommendations in the future.
