FLA releases fifth annual Student Committee Journal exploring pressing human rights and social responsibility issues

Issues Child Labor Fair Compensation

The Fair Labor Association (FLA) recently released the fifth volume of the FLA Student Committee Journal. The journal, authored by members of FLA’s Student Committee, focuses on social responsibility topics of the 21st century and is the culmination of the committee’s work throughout the 2024-2025 academic year.

This year’s volume consists of six essays written by Student Committee members covering the following topics:

  • Labor standards and the circular fashion transition
  • Child labor in Nepal’s brick kilns
  • Current challenges faced by garment workers in Bangladesh
  • Child labor in the U.S. meatpacking industry
  • The relationship between IMF interventions and labor rights
  • Surveillance in Amazon facilities and its impact on workers

For the 2024–2025 academic year, 24 students from 18 universities participated in the Committee. Six of the students wrote articles sharing their perspectives, while five students (including four of the authors) supported the editing process.

Student Committee members are selected from undergraduate and graduate students enrolled at one of FLA’s approximately 140 member colleges and universities across North America. The Student Committee provides opportunities for real-world learning, professional development, and networking with peers, subject matter experts, and FLA staff.

FLA looks forward to continuing to collaborate with university students, who are some of the most passionate and vocal defenders of workers’ rights. The application process for the 2025–2026 FLA Student Committee will open later this summer.
